“Today’s Downstream Oil
Industry in Australia”
"The rhetoric often expressed in the media is that the petroleum industry
is dominated by mega oil companies who are making billions of dollars of
profits at the expense of the motorist who are being ripped off at the
pump.
The reality is that the industry is in crisis. As currently structured
the refinery industry across Australia has been operating at a loss for
a number of years yet it urgently needs to be able to fund investment to
meet the Government timetable for new fuel specifications and greenhouse
gas reductions. At the retail level there is a myriad of regulations at
all levels of government that are preventing market restructuring to the
detriment of the consumer. So where do we go next and is there a way forward."
