AIE Sydney - Evening Presentation - Weather forecasting and its use in energy supply and demand

Venue: AECOM, L21, 420 George Street, Sydney

Date: Mon 04 Jun 2018 @ 5:45pm to 8:00pm

AIE SYDNEY - EVENING PRESENTATION - WEATHER FORECASTING AND ITS USE IN ENERGY SUPPLY AND DEMAND

Presented by: Josh Fisher, Account Manager, Weatherzone & Jack Fox, Principal Analyst, Operational Forecasting AEMO with an introduction by Craig Bearsley, Director - Power and Industrial, NSW/ACT, AECOM

With the increasing penetration of solar and wind energies in the NEM and virtually all other electricity markets around the world, prediction of output from these and other renewable generators in the short to medium term becomes increasingly important. Weather also affects the output from thermal generators, and of course market demand, particularly due to the penetration of air conditioning.

AIE SYDNEY BRANCH IS PLEASED TO PRESENT TWO SPEAKERS ON THIS IMPORTANT TOPIC:

Josh Fisher has worked for Weatherzone since 2009. He was previously Head of Meteorology and is currently an Account Manager. His portfolio includes clients in energy trading, generation, retail and renewables, amongst others. His background is in meteorology and he has a Bachelor of Science specialising in Meteorology from Plymouth State University.

Josh will provide an outline of Weatherzone's services, including products and industries serviced and what particularly the energy industry are looking for, as well as information on how the data is obtained and what variables and level of detail can be provided in space and time.

Jack Fox is Principal Analyst, Operational Forecasting at AEMO and has worked there for eight years.

Jack has qualifications in Computer Engineering and Business/Commerce from Sydney University and has an interesting range of experience in software/systems development, load forecasting, intermittent generation (wind/solar) forecasting and statistical analysis.

Jack will discuss AEMO’s use of weather data (forecasts and observations) in making both electricity demand and supply forecasts, the challenges that AEMO faces with the current and likely future generation mix, and how AEMO is adapting its systems, processes and people to address these challenges.
