AIE Sydney | The future of the Australian Energy market – Possible Scenarios

Venue: Clifford Chance

Date: Tue 19 Nov 2019 @ 5:15pm to 8:00pm

A general view from the authorities responsible for the national energy market is that Australia is grappling with an energy market in transition continuing to obey the laws of physics.  It is suggested that there will be more dispersed intermittent renewable electricity generation, technology to integrate these generators, infrastructure provided to deliver the Integrated System Plan and allow consumers to become prosumers using the electricity grid as a transport means for private sale or purchase of electricity.
What needs to be done to meet this scenario and what would the future system look like in the near future and beyond that?  Hear from our panel of expert speakers about their views on the future for the NEM.
Alan Rai from AEMC will discuss the AEMC’s priority areas for reform – A broad overview of AEMC’s work program with a focus on recent AEMC work on reforms to electricity transmission and distribution networks.
Sandra Gamble, Board member and Chair of System Operations Committee – New Zealand Electricity Authority – will provide her insights from New Zealand and other countries including the USA, the UK and Ireland.
Hugh Bannister, CEO, Intelligent Energy Systems, will discuss his recent IES Insider newsletter on the Institutional Challenges Facing the NEM.
The session will include a short presentation from each speaker following by a Q&A Panel discussion.
More details about each speaker are provided overleaf.
There will also be an opening address by Clifford Chance partner, Richard Graham and closing remarks from Clifford Chance partner and Co-Head of the Global Oil & Gas Group, Nadia Kalic.
