Negotiating the NEG in the NEM

Afternoon Forum on The National Energy Guarantee with Dr Kerry Schott and Distinguished Speakers

Introduction

In October 2017 the Energy Security Board (ESB) presented the proposed National Energy Guarantee (NEG) to the COAG Energy Council. The aim of the NEG is to support the provision of reliable, secure and affordable electricity in a context of significant disruption in the National Electricity Market (NEM). At its meeting in November 2017, COAG Energy Council resolved that the ESB undertake detailed design work and consultation on the NEG, with results to be presented in April 2018.

Many energy sector players have expressed their approval of COAG’s resolution, in some cases perhaps only because the NEG is the best (or least worst?) policy option currently on the table. With the ESB’s detailed design and consultation work now well underway, some key questions for the AIE Forum will be: How can the NEG enable more reliable, affordable and cleaner electricity to be delivered in the NEM?  What are its pros and cons – from various stakeholders’ perspectives? Can it be successfully bolted on to the existing NEM frameworks? Will it be future-proofed against future political “interventions”?

We invite you to join us to hear from Dr Kerry Schott, ESB Chair, and a panel of distinguished speakers who will discuss these important issues for the future of the NEM.
