Leadership in Energy

The Future of Sustainable Transport (Energy Conversations - a joint ANU ECI & AIE event)

Venue: <2degrees Renewable Innovation Hub, Ground Floor, 19-23 Moore Street, Turner, ACT 2612

Date: Tue 20 Mar 2018 @ 5:00pm to 7:00pm

The electric vehicle revolution is on its way to Australia.

The Minister for the Environment and Energy, Josh Frydenberg, has likened the scale of disruption to be caused by the imminent revolution to the introduction of the iPhone.

Electric vehicles will be a game-changer for the transport industry and Australia needs to prepare.

Hear experts from the Australian National University and the ACT Government discuss the future of sustainable transport at the Renewables Innovation Hub, 5 - 7pm, Tuesday 20 March.

  • Dr Matt Stocks, Convenor, Energy Change Institute Sustainable Transport cluster, ANU - Will electric vehicles break the network?

Electric vehicles are expected to contribute significantly to carbon emissions reductions, driven by rapidly decreasing battery prices and increased renewable electricity usage. While vastly more energy efficient than internal combustion engines, electric vehicles will substantially increase electricity consumption. In this presentation, Matt will discuss the implications of increased electricity demand and the importance of charging decisions in supporting this transition.

  • Dr Paul Burke, Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University - Pricing approaches for improved road transport

Traffic congestion is a mounting problem in Australia’s cities. Paul’s talk will explore the potential to adopt a modern system of road-use pricing to replace the current fuel excise regime. Such a system could provide appropriate incentives for both managing traffic congestion and reducing emissions from road use. The economic benefits of more efficiently-managed roads would be large.

  • A representative from the ACT Government will discuss future options for decarbonising the ACT’s transport sector. TBC.
