6. CONCLUSIONS
There have been major improvements in reliability of Australian electricity
generating plant in recent years. Apparently this has been achieved
primarily by management changes within the stations. Australian reliability
now appears very good in relation to US figures. The Australian average
availability factor would appear to be exceeded by only about 3% of the
stations in the US.
This improvement in reliability appears to have had an impact on spot prices in the South Eastern Australian electricity market. This extra reliability means there is much more capacity selling to the system at a very low extra cost.
The capacity of generation is adequate at present for all conditions but within 2-4 years problems may occur during peak demand on hot days. This will result in the construction of a new power station in Victoria, probably a gas turbine.
