Tariffs in
The National Electricity Market
Electricity costs to franchise customers are still controlled by government
regulated tariffs. These cease in most states in January 2001.
Contestable customers can buy electricity at the spot price but nearly
all sign contracts with an energy retailer.
Electricity costs to contestable customers consist of
-
a negotiated contract for energy with the energy retailer
-
a regulated network tariff for use of the "poles and wires" with a local
monopoly distributor
-
metering charges
-
miscellaneous NEMMCO charges
There are no published tariffs for the retailer energy charges but the
network tariffs are regulated and published. The network tariffs for the
five Victorian distributors can be downloaded from http://www.reggen.vic.gov.au.
For larger energy consumers, the tariffs are maximum demand based. That
is they have a charge for maximum electrical demand
in kVA or kW over any half hour period.
