11 June 2024 AIE (Queensland) | Site Visit - LGI Bunya Hybrid Renewable Energy Facility

Thursday 11, Jul 2024
The AIE Queensland Branch visited the LGI Bunya Hybrid Renewable Energy Facility hosted by CEO Jarryd Dorran and Innovation and Development Manager Matthew Tap.

The Bunya Facility located within the Morton Bay Regional Council Waste Management Facility captures the landfill gas produced from the waste and combusts it in a power generator to destroy the methane emissions while producing dispatchable, renewable electricity to supply into the local distribution grid.

The Bunya facility was initially set up to flare the harmful methane emissions, but in 2018 the facility was upgraded to include a 1MW generator to produce renewable power from the landfill gas. This was subsequently downsized to 600kW in 2021 to match the landfill gas volumes.

Recently a 1MW/2MWh Tesla Megapack Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was added to provide additional benefits.

Participants at the Site Visit could see how the landfill gas generator worked in conjunction with the traditional flaring systems traditionally used at landfill sites and how the system integrated with the BESS. The Bunya site still flared excess gas that could not be utilised for electricity generation due to export limitations to the grid Matthew Tapp explained how through LGI´s Dynamic Asset Control System (DACS), the energy generated and stored could be dispatched within seconds to the grid, providing benefits to the local community. Whilst the site provided environmental benefits by significantly reducing emissions from the landfill gas. The methane in the landfill gas is a 28 more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, so combusting it permanently destroys those emissions. Using the methane to generate and dispatch electricity during peak demand periods also provided significant benefits to the local distribution grid.

The Site Visit ended with a lengthy Q & A session followed by additional networking focused on the systems operations and interaction with the grid.
